.50 BMG FAQs

Is a .50 BMG legal for me to own? Do I have to have a special license?

The .50 BMG is legal to purchase and own without any special license or process everywhere in the US except California (we have CA legal options by request).

Although, to be absolutely sure, and as laws are ever changing, it is always a good idea to double check its legality with the FFL dealer you will be using for the transfer.

How much does .50 BMG ammo cost?

This depends on what kind of ammo, where you buy it, and it what quantities. .50 BMG ammo can be bought for anywhere from $1.75 per round up to $6.00 and over per round. Good ball ammo averages $2-3 per round.

How much recoil can I expect from a rifle chambered in .50 BMG?

Recoil varies considerably between rifle models and the ammunition you use, but the following are comparable recoil intensities for each model:

RN-50: 12 gauge slug or 00 buck magnum.

BFG-50: 12 gauge 00 buck.

BFG-50A: 12 gauge with pheasant loads.

Do I have to have a special expensive scope made to handle the recoil of such a large round?

In a way. You will want a scope that is specifically rated for .50 BMG recoil, but there are good scope options rated for .50 BMG recoil as cheap as $350.

Where can I shoot a .50 BMG?

As long as you have a place to shoot with a good back stop, you have a place to shoot. Many ranges, even indoor ones are rated for and allow .50 BMG.
